10 Minutes of SILENCE
Written By Salvatore Iacona
Hi everyone, welcome back! If you’ve read my last blogs, you know that I talked about the power of the morning and the mirror game—two simple but powerful ways to start your day with awareness.
Today, I want to introduce something that might sound too simple to be effective: 10 minutes of silence. But trust me, this small habit has the power to change the way you think, feel, and live your life.
Let me ask you a question: When was the last time you sat in complete silence—no phone, no TV, no background noise, just you and your thoughts? If your answer is "I don’t even remember," then you’re not alone.
I used to be the same. My mind was constantly busy, always running after the next thing. I thought that being “productive” meant filling every moment with something—music, conversations, social media, or planning my day. But what I didn’t realize was that I was running away from the most important thing: myself.
Why Silence Feels Uncomfortable (At First)
When I first tried sitting in silence, I hated it. My mind was restless. Thoughts were jumping around like crazy—things I had to do, past regrets, random memories. It felt like I was trapped with my own thoughts, and I wanted to escape.
But then I realized something: I had never actually faced myself in stillness before. I had never given my mind the space to settle, to process, to just be.
Most of us are afraid of silence because in that space, we have to confront our real emotions. But once you push past the discomfort, something amazing happens… peace. Clarity. Understanding.
How to Practice 10 Minutes of Silence
I’m not talking about meditation, guided breathing, or any complicated technique. Just pure silence. Here’s what I do:
1. Find Your Space
It doesn’t have to be perfect. Your room, a quiet spot outside, even your car before heading into work. Anywhere you can be alone.
2. Set a Timer
I use my phone, but I place it far from me—no checking messages, no distractions. Just 10 minutes.
3. Close Your Eyes & Breathe
No need to control your breath. Just listen to it. Notice how your body feels. Let the silence wrap around you.
4. Let Your Thoughts Flow
Your mind will wander. You might start thinking about random things. That’s okay. Just observe. Don’t judge. Let the thoughts come and go, like waves in the ocean.
5. Stay With It Until the End
At some point, your brain will say, "This is boring." "I need to do something." Don’t listen. Stay. You’re training your mind to be still, to find strength in silence.
6. Open Your Eyes & Reflect
Once the timer goes off, take a deep breath and notice how you feel. More relaxed? Clearer? Or maybe uncomfortable? No matter what, you did it.
The Power of Silence
When I started practicing this, I noticed something crazy. I was calmer. I was more present. And most importantly, I was more connected to myself.
I stopped feeling like I had to constantly entertain my mind. I started making better decisions. My emotions became clearer.
And the best part? I realized that all the answers I had been searching for… were already inside me. I just needed silence to hear them.
Try It for a Week
I challenge you: for the next 7 days, take just 10 minutes of silence each day. No distractions, no expectations. Just sit and listen to yourself.
At first, it might feel weird. But stick with it. Because in that silence, you might just find something you’ve been looking for.
